A ton of psychological research over the last decade has concluded that experiences offer more lasting happiness than possessions. Moreover, a number of mom sites have pointed out that since kids are typically overwhelmed by choice, less is more with toys. Too many things to play with usually result in a kid playing with nothing.

Thanksgiving provides a great reason to talk to our kids about gratitude. But, the conversation need not end post turkey-and-stuffing food coma. The Greater Good Science Center at UC Berkeley recently found that, "people who practice gratitude feel considerably happier (25%).” So, how can we work gratitude into our daily family life ... and begin instilling this practice in our little ones, even when they are still toddlers? Here are three ways:

1.     Create Gratitude Gift Lists—In addition to gift lists for Santa and Nana, help your child write a list of the less tangible gifts in their life, like for example, the woman who squeezed them out of her crotch or sustained major abdominal surgery to give them life. They’ll more likely say Daniel Tiger or Annie’s gummy snacks, but it’s a start!

2.     Make It a Routine—Add “What are you most thankful for today?” to your daily questions, perhaps at dinner or bedtime. Psychologists suggest making the concept more concrete by having children talk about a “rose” (e.g. mom made mac n cheese) and “thorn” (she snuck squash in the cheese) from their day.

3.     Have Look Days—Every once in a while take your kids shopping, but let them know beforehand that you do not intend to buy anything. Tell them to enjoy seeing and maybe even touching the cool stuff, but remind them that they probably don’t need a third Batman figurine (even though the arms move “more better” on this one).

happy baby is ONE!

First, we want to extend a BIG thank you to everyone who helped us celebrate our ONE-year anniversary last week! Our turnout was much larger than expected, so much so casual passerby were curious about happy baby and our celebration!

We hope everyone that joined us had a chance to check out our fitness gear sidewalk sale. The coordinating Mommy and Me tank tops and leggings by Chocolate Milke are designed by a local mama, Angela Lanahan, and made of organic recycled bamboo. (organic, made in America, etc). Our instructors love them, and we think you will too! If you missed them at the celebration, they are available for purchase at happy baby and custom orders are an option too.

The kids were having so much fun at our face painting station with Sarah Fairy. She had a steady stream of super hero’s and princesses all afternoon. After a few moments with Sarah, the kids were over the moon and showing off their designs to their new friends. Thank you for joining us, Sarah, we ADORE you! You helped add a bit of sparkle and a touch of magic to the afternoon. 

The studio itself was filled with mommies, daddies, and kids. Everyone was dancing, laughing, and socializing. It filled our hearts with joy to see toddlers playing drums, older kids interacting and dancing with colorful scarves, and parents sitting casually amidst it all getting to know each other (while sipping on tasty libations provided by Dulce Vida Organic Tequila)!

Of course, motherhood is something we celebrate EVERYDAY.....but we show a little extra love + appreciation in MAY. In case you've lost track of time (which, let's be honest, is VEEEEEERY easy to do when you're a mama), MOTHER'S DAY is this Sunday :) Not only is happy baby offering some special promotions (20% off class packs + 10% off retail), but we also have some fabulous workshops/special classes scheduled that will help add some relaxation, mindfulness + practical solutions to your life!  

Additionally, if you haven't heard, happy baby offers an ENTIRE SERIES of mama workouts, at times intended to cater to the varying schedules of working AND stay-at-home mamas. Full class descriptions are available here....but an overview is listed below.  Some of these classes are more restorative to gently ease your body back into exercise (e.g. postnatal yoga), most are designed to kick your booty + make you sweat, and in all your pre-walking baby is welcome (though certainly not required) to join you for class.

  • tuesday: mama cardio blast (10:30am) | postnatal dance (7:15pm)
