about the studio
Once upon a time, there were two adorable babies named Charley and Declan. Their parents took them to swim class every weekend. They loved to swim. Charley’s mommy and daddy, Erin and Ben, and Declan’s mommy and daddy, Brandi and Sharkey, began to hang out and became friends. This is the story of what came next.
In 2015, feeling somewhat unfulfilled professionally with the practice of law, Erin began exploring some entrepreneurial ideas and became excited about the possibility of starting a business. There were opportunities that presented themselves, but none seemed like the right fit. Taking into consideration her own pre & postpartum experience of having to drive all over LA to find prenatal workshops, mommy groups, and fun activities for little Charley (particularly ones available evenings + weekends), Erin identified the need for a space in the South Bay that offered all of this programming and was accessible to both single- and dual-working families. She began conceptualizing this dream studio for expectant and new parents. She even gave it a name and a place. ‘happy baby’ and it had to be on Main Street in El Segundo.
Meanwhile, Brandi was busy chipping away at her 3000 intern hours to become a Marriage & Family Therapist. She had already began working at a non-profit family center in Mar Vista and discovered her passion for supporting new moms. With the end of a very long road in sight, Brandi began questioning ‘what’s next?’. Pulling from her own postpartum experience of feeling incredibly alone since both extended families live cross country, she recognized how important it is for new moms to build community and wanted to help facilitate that. She began conceptualizing a place where she could be around moms and children, helping and supporting, while having fun.
On one fateful night in September 2015, the two families met for dinner in El Segundo. Brandi was excitedly telling Erin about her ideas of possibly opening a family wellness center, when Erin stopped her before she could finish and began sharing her own desire to open a similar space incorporating yoga and a holistic approach to supporting families. And so, our partnership commenced shortly thereafter, happy baby was conceived…..and we were full speed ahead on this incredible journey.
We poured over every detail when designing the happy baby studio. From paint color to pendant lights, we made decisions based on wanting to create a place where parents can come and feel a little peace, and kids can come and find a little fun! We’ve created a cozy lounge area in the front and back of the studio so that parents don’t feel rushed during transitions between classes. There is also a private office where we can have individual sessions with clients in need of additional support. In the front of the studio, you’ll find some fun and cute items for sale, as well as some necessities too.
